What do Nat Geo, Oscar Meyer & David Ogilvy have in common?

Three books that began my career journey.

My fascination with marketing started at a young age. As a kid, I'd comb the front pages of old National Geographic magazines to see how car ads had evolved over the decades. I loved the jingles of Coca Cola, McDonalds, and Oscar Meyer. I'd actually watch (and rewatch) the commercials on VCR recordings instead of fast-forwarding.

A few years later, as I was finishing college, I read three books: Ogilvy on Advertising, The Art of Writing Advertising, and Bill Bernbach’s Big Book of Advertising. I probably pulled the last one off the shelf because it was taller than all the other books. As I poured through the pages, to say I was hooked was an understatement. I decided to pursue an MBA and earned distinction as the state's top marketing student at the University of Oregon. I felt I had finally found my calling but it was probably there all along.

Since then, I've been able to work across the globe, managing some of the world's greatest brands, and launching over 100 products and services. Each project is a new puzzle with a distinct solution -- a unique blend of brand mission, product attributes, data and customer insights, strategies and creative tactics. I follow five rules in marketing:

  1. Listen to the customer.

  2. Tell an interesting story.

  3. Know what you believe and what you’re great at.

  4. Market from the inside out.

  5. Bend all other rules!

It's been a great ride so far. Where to next?
